How Does CBD Work For Pets?
CBD has become the hot topic of wellness, as recognized for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties. As the CBD industry continues to grow, its popularity has even reached the pet care department.
It’s not as strange as it sounds! CBD is not only safe for your pet, but CBD can benefit cats and dogs in ways that are similar to their bipedal buddies. Pet owners have begun giving their animals CBD in hopes of treating seizures, chronic pain, digestive problems and anxiety.
Just like humans, cats and dogs have a series of receptors in their bodies that make up the endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate and process pain and stress to maintain homeostasis.
When CBD enters the endocannabinoid system, it helps to process pain and inflammation more effectively, and can also help to alleviate stress.
Whether you wish to alleviate your cat’s chronic arthritis pain, or you simply want to help your dog stay calm during the fireworks show on the Fourth of July, CBD could help your pet.

Frequently Asked Questions About CBD and Pets
The following are some of the most frequently-asked questions regarding the use of CBD for Pets.
CBD has been deemed by the World Health Organization as safe for human and animal consumption. While CBD is virtually harmless to your pet, you should always opt for a hemp-derived product with less than 0.3% THC. Animals are very sensitive to THC.
Vets recommend that dosages for cats should be kept at .5-5 mgs, starting out as low as possible. As for dogs, there’s a much greater variety in size, so it will vary at a greater range. Many veterinary websites offer a dosage calculator which you can input based on your dog’s weight and the amount of CBD in your product. It’s currently not appropriate for CBD companies to make treatment dosage reccomendations. When the FDA issues its guidelines more information on CBD dosages will be available.
Since full-spectrum CBD usually has an extremely low amount of THC, it is safe for pets. In fact, full-spectrum CBD can be beneficial for pets, since they, too, experience and benefit from the “entourage effect,” which is when the entire spectrum of cannabinoids work together for optimal performance.
Try to find a CBD oil that has not decarboxylated the cannabinoids. Raw THC is actually a different chemical altogether THCA which is not intoxicating and must go through a process called decarboxylation (usually through heating) to become high inducing.
There is no data regarding side effects or toxicity associated with CBD in pets, however those observed in humans include: dry mouth, low blood pressure, light headedness, and drowsiness. Signs of liver injury have also been reported in some patients, but this is less common.
The way in which you give your pet CBD depends on you, and should be based around your pets’ preferences and behaviors.
Dogs may do better with treats, but since cats can get a bit finicky, the easiest route with your feline friends may be to add drops to their food. You can either give your pet a small dosage of CBD tincture drops, or you can buy your pets specially-made CBD pet treats.
